Emergency Management Plan
The Niagara Region Emergency Management Plan establishes the framework for responding to a number of risks Niagara Region may face in the future. In collaboration with key officials, agencies, departments, and stakeholders, it's a guideline that outlines collective and individual roles and responsibilities in responding to, managing, and recovering from an emergency.
Section 2.1 of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act provides the legal authority to develop and implement a plan of this nature. This section of the Act states: "Every municipality shall develop and implement an emergency management program and the council of the municipality shall by by-law adopt the emergency management program."
What counts as an emergency?
A situation that could seriously harm people or cause major property damage — caused by nature, a health risk or an accident.
Who can declare an emergency?
A mayor for their city or town, the Regional Chair for Niagara-wide emergencies, or the Premier for the province.
Response priorities
Responder safety and saving lives always come first, ahead of protecting property or reducing economic loss.
We don't respond alone
When needed, we can request help from other levels of government and specialized partner agencies to support the response.
