Alternate drop off location: Waste can also be brought to Walker Environmental Group at 2800 Thorold Townline Rd., Thorold.

Arriving at the depot

  • Sort items ahead of time for easy unloading
  • Loads must be secure when entering the site
  • Stop at the scale upon entering

Cash, Interac, Visa and Mastercard are accepted at all locations.

How to prepare special waste

Used batteries can be dropped off free of charge at your local recycling depot or at many nearby stores. Don't put batteries in the garbage or recycling bins.

Accepted battery types

  • Standard alkaline batteries: A, AA, AAA, C, D, 6V and 9V
  • Lithium and mercury batteries
  • Rechargeable batteries: lithium-ion, nickel-cadmium and small sealed lead-acid
  • Lead-acid car batteries

Before you drop-off batteries

  • Tape the terminals of lithium, rechargeable and 9-volt batteries, or any battery with exposed terminals
  • Keep batteries dry and protected from damage
  • Do not place damaged, swollen, leaking or hot batteries in a regular battery collection container. Contact the depot for instructions before bringing them in.

Never pour fats, oil or grease down the drain or toilet. As they cool, they solidify and clog your pipes and the sewer system, which can lead to backups in your home.

Solid fats and grease

Lard, butter, bacon fat and other solid fats can go in your Green Bin for curbside collection, or be taken to a drop-off facility.

Liquid oil and grease

  • Tiny amounts (500 ml or less) — absorb with paper towel, newspaper, kitty litter or sawdust and place in your Green Bin
  • Small amounts (1 litre or less) — pour into a container, freeze, then remove the frozen grease from the container and place it in your Green Bin
  • Large amounts (more than 1 litre) — bring to a drop-off facility in containers no larger than 20 litres; maximum 40 litres per day

Household hazardous waste includes materials that are toxic, flammable, corrosive or reactive. Never place these materials in the garbage, Green Bin or in recycling. They require special handling to protect Niagara's environment and drinking water sources.

Household hazardous waste depots accept residential hazardous waste only. Industrial, commercial or institutional hazardous waste is not accepted.

Before you arrive

  • Make sure all materials are in their original or clearly labelled containers
  • Ensure all containers are securely capped and sealed
  • Liquid waste must be in containers no larger than 20 L
  • Maximum of 40 L of liquid waste per day. Barrels and drums are not accepted
  • Maximum of 15 lamps or tubes per day

At the depot

  • Turn off your vehicle's engine before unloading
  • Unload materials from your vehicle. Let the depot attendant know if you need help.
  • Gasoline and oil will not be decanted. The container and its contents will be taken for safe disposal.

Important

  • Depots are for Niagara residents only
  • Industrial, commercial or institutional hazardous waste is not accepted

Large rigid plastic household items can be dropped off free of charge at Niagara Region drop-off depots for recycling. To be accepted, all metal parts and batteries must be removed, and items must be no larger than 122 cm x 122 cm.

Large rigid plastics can also be booked for curbside large-item collection. When collected curbside, these items are collected as garbage and sent to to landfill rather than recycled.

Accepted items include:

  • Plastic buckets, pails and drums
  • Plastic crates and trays
  • Plastic baskets, totes, containers, boxes and cases
  • Rigid plastic toys and pools
  • Plastic furniture and pet carriers
  • Plastic-shell infant car seats and booster seats, with all buckles, padding and metal parts removed

Not accepted:

  • Items containing metal, wood, rubber
  • Items containing batteries
  • Coolers
  • Pipes or PVC piping
  • Siding

An oversized item is anything that exceeds three cubic metres in combined dimensions or eight metres (25 feet) in length, and cannot be transported in a passenger vehicle without a trailer, crane or chain pulley.

All oversized item disposal must be arranged in advance. Call the Waste Info-Line at 905-356-4141 or 1-800-594-5542 before arriving at the site. Liquids, holding tanks, batteries and metal or plastic components must be removed before arrival. Disposal fees apply.

Improper disposal of syringes and other sharps poses a health hazard to the community and sanitation workers. Never place sharps in your garbage, recycling or Green Bin.

Found on public property

If you find a syringe or sharp on a public road or in a park, call the Waste Info-Line at 905-356-4141 or 1-800-594-5542.

Found on private property

  1. Bring a sharps container or other sealable container to the location
  2. Using tongs or pliers, carefully pick up the sharp. Keep the needle pointing down and away from your body.
  3. Deposit the sharp into the container, needle end first
  4. Close the container securely and follow the disposal instructions

Where to dispose of sharps

Prescription drug disposal

Take unused medications to a household hazardous waste depot or local pharmacy for free disposal. Do not put medications in the garbage, Green Bin, recycling boxes, or pour them down the drain.

If you are stuck by a needle or other sharp:

  • Gently wash the area with soap and cool water
  • Do not suck the blood from the injury or squeeze around it
  • Seek medical attention as soon as possible

Niagara Region offers free textile donation and recycling at drop-off locations. All items must be dry and free from mildew or contamination such as grease or oil. Bring textiles in bags or cardboard boxes.

You can place recyclable textiles in the textile collection box at Bridge Street Waste and Recycling Drop-Off Depot, or provide them to the Reusable Goods Centres at Humberstone Landfill and Niagara Road 12 Landfill. Clearly identify ripped, torn or unmatched items as “recyclable”.
