Community housing

Housing Services determines eligibility for community housing and maintains the wait list for Niagara.

You must apply to be placed on the wait list. Since the wait is long and Housing Services can't predict when a unit will become available or when a provider will be able to house you, we encourage you to make other housing arrangements in the meantime.

Understanding rent types

Rent type What it means Who pays what
Rent-geared-to-income Your rent is based on your household income, typically around 30 per cent of gross household income. You pay affordable rent based on your income. This is subsidized housing.
Market rent Rent with no subsidy. You pay the full monthly rent with no financial assistance.
Affordable rent Rent set below market rate but not based on income. You pay a reduced rent that's lower than market rate but not income-based.
