Project overview
Niagara Region initiated a Schedule B Class Environmental Assessment to plan upgrades for the Mewburn Road Sewage Pumping Station to provide long-term pumping reliability and performance to the existing drainage area.
The existing station at 2617 Mewburn Road in Niagara Falls was built in 1988 and has undergone several repairs and upgrades since that time. A recent inspection found that the pumping station is again in need of major repair or replacement to provide continued reliable service. Neither Niagara Region nor the City of Niagara Falls owns the land currently occupied by the pumping station, so alternative locations for a new sewage pumping station were considered.
The pumping station's existing rated capacity is projected to be adequate for 25 years or more. Based on the study's evaluation, it was determined that building a new sewage pumping station at the closed landfill entrance at the corner of Mewburn Road was the preferred alternative. This location is on Mewburn Road, approximately 320 metres north of the existing station, on Niagara Region-owned land.
To connect the new pumping station to the sanitary sewer system, a new forcemain will be installed along Mewburn and Mountain roads. The project is in the detailed design phase, with construction expected to start in 2023.
The map in the image gallery shows the current location (at the corner of Mountain Road and Mewburn Road) for the Mewburn Road Pumping Station and the sewage pumping station forcemain. The catchment area runs from the bottom of Scholfield Road, down Mewburn Road to the top of Mountain Road.
