Project overview

About the project

Niagara Region has completed a Schedule B Municipal Class Environmental Assessment study for the Catherine Street Sewage Pumping Station at 8 Catherine St. in Fort Erie.

The station was built in 1981 and has since undergone various maintenance repairs and has reached the end of its service life. Results of the study show aging infrastructure that needs repair or replacement to properly service the Town of Fort Erie.

The current location of the pumping station and the neighbouring lot are owned by Niagara Region. Both locations were considered for an upgraded station along with other alternatives.

The study defined current and future needs as outlined in the Water and Wastewater Master Plan and evaluated alternative strategies to avoid or minimize impacts to the community and natural environment. The plan shows that future capacity demands will increase due to operational, capacity and wet weather constraints.

The assessment recommended the construction of a new sewage pumping station on the vacant lot at 263 Niagara Blvd. The conceptual design is pending the review of growth projection analysis in the catchment area.

Archaeological work updates

The initial archaeological work at the site provided findings that warranted further and more detailed investigation.

Archaeologists are now conducting a detailed investigation in collaboration with Indigenous groups to uncover and document any potential historical and cultural artifacts.

A temporary structure was built at the site in December 2024 to protect the excavated piles and to maintain site access for the ongoing archeological work during winter conditions.
