Project overview
The Bender Hill Sewage Pumping Station is an underground pumping station at 5615 River Rd. in Niagara Falls. The station is located beneath the travelled portion of River Road just east of the Rainbow Bridge in the heart of the tourism centre of the city.
The pumping station has two underground levels that contain process equipment and sewage wet wells. This underground structure has been damaged due to corrosive elements, such as road de-icing agents and naturally-occurring hydrogen sulfide. There are also staff accessibility constraints.
A Municipal Class 'B' Environmental Assessment was carried out as part of the project and it reviewed the best solution for wastewater servicing for the area, including a detailed review of alternate locations for the pumping stations.
Through an extensive evaluation process that included public engagement with local residents and businesses, Niagara Region, Niagara Falls and Niagara Parks Commission, the study recommended the rehabilitation of the station's structural, electrical, instrumentation and mechanical components.
The study also recommended the realignment of River Road to allow for the safe routing of traffic in the areas surrounding the station and to improve pedestrian and workers' safety.
The design phase of the project will be completed in fall 2026 with construction to begin in spring 2027.
