    The Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention division promotes:

    • Healthy eating
    • Tobacco-free living
    • Active living
    • Sun safety

    The division is also responsible for:

    • Preventing the misuse of drugs and alcohol
    • Helping people learn how to be safe in their everyday lives, in the home and on the road
    • Supporting workplace health through policy development
    • Enforcing the Smoke-Free Ontario Act

  • Emergency Services

    Responsible for providing 24-hour emergency pre-hospital medical care, the Emergency Services division includes:

    • A team of paramedics, emergency medical dispatchers and community response unit
    • State of the art communications dispatch centre for 9-1-1 ambulance calls
    • Public safety education programs
    • Medical coverage for events (contract service)

  • Environmental Health

    Niagara Region is leading a number of initiatives related to the health of our environment. The Environmental Health division:

    • Investigates public health concerns about environmental health hazards
    • Conducts inspections of food establishments, nursing homes, migrant farm worker housing and personal services establishments
    • Inspects water quality of beaches and small water drinking systems
    • Surveillance of mosquitoes and ticks to prevent West Nile Virus and Lyme disease

  • Family Health

    The Family Health division provides resources and services to pregnant women, expectant or new families with children from birth to 18 years. Program areas include:

    • Reproductive health
    • Healthy babies / healthy children
    • Child health
    • Dental health
    • Infant and child development services
    • School health programs providing support and resources to families of school-aged children

  • Medical

    The Medical division consists of the offices of the medical officer of health and associate medical officers of health. As part of a regional government structure, the medical officer also serves as the commissioner of Public Health. The associate medical officers of health serve as superintendents of the department programs. The Medical division:

    • Is accountable for the general health and well-being of Niagara's residents
    • Acts as the public voice at a local, provincial and federal level for the health needs of our community
    • Identifies potential health risks and coordinates a local response
    • Interprets and acts upon emerging information about potential threats to the health of the community

    The division has a solid foundation in scientific, medical and clinical fields, as well as risk management and communication skills.
