Urban Design and Landscape Architecture

Urban design is the practice of designing and shaping the built environment. A strong focus on urban design makes unique, attractive, and inviting places for people to enjoy.

As our region grows, we're focused on creating policies and standards that build great communities and contribute to the wellbeing of our residents.

The urban design and landscape architecture team was established in 2016 in Planning and Development Services. The purpose of this team is to:

  • Promote design excellence in development planning by encouraging best practices in urban design
  • Provide design support on projects, including roads, streetscapes, public buildings and spaces
  • Implement the Region's Model Urban Design Guidelines
  • Collaborate with local municipalities on urban design and landscape architectural projects
  • Celebrate design excellence in Niagara with the Niagara Biennial Design Awards
  • Provide grants to local municipalities for enhancement of regional roads through the Public Realm Investment Program
