Niagara Region events for Waste Reduction Week Oct. 20-26
Waste Reduction Week is a national campaign that raises awareness about why reducing waste is important and encourages Canadians to take action in their communities. From Oct. 20-26, we’re hosting activities including waste management facility tours and a family-friendly Trash-or-Treat event.
Humberstone Landfill Tour
Wednesday, Oct. 22, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Ever wonder what happens to your garbage after it leaves the curb? This behind-the-scenes tour of the Humberstone Landfill shows insight into Niagara Region’s waste management system and the importance of waste diversion. Explore the landfill, waste and recycling drop-off depot, reuse depot and household hazardous waste depot. You might even meet one of the hawks that help with pest control!

Tour departs from Niagara Region Headquarters, Campbell West Entrance, 1815 Sir Isaac Brock Way, Thorold. Transportation is provided.
Trash-or-Treat at Glenridge Quarry Naturalization Site
Sunday, Oct. 26, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Celebrate Halloween sustainably at this family-friendly event. It features an educational trail with interactive booths on waste reduction, reuse and composting.
Activities include:
- Do it yourself costume demonstration and make your own treat bag station
- Waste sorting games
- Pumpkin composting demonstrations
- Eco-art crafts
- Trash-to-Treasure exchange
- Photo opportunities with Phil the Green Bin, Niagara Region Waste Management’s mascot
Open to all Niagara residents, this event promotes environmental care in a fun and engaging way.
Community booths – Waste Reduction Week
Oct. 20-26
Learn about waste reduction practices and upcoming Waste Management initiatives. Staff will be available to answer questions and provide educational materials and giveaways.
Booth schedule:
- Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1 to 6 p.m. - Pen Centre, St. Catharines
- Thursday, Oct. 23, 3 to 6 p.m. - Fleming Centre, Lincoln
- Friday, Oct. 24, 3 to 6 p.m. - Seaway Mall, Welland
Additional locations may be added.
Reusable goods drop-off contest
Oct. 20-26
Support reuse and reduce landfill waste by dropping off gently used items at Humberstone or Niagara Road 12. Each drop-off earns a ballot for a chance to win a $50 prepaid card. One winner will be randomly chosen at the end of the week.
