How We Flow - Master Servicing Plan

Niagara Region works with area municipalities to provide communities with safe, clean drinking water and effective environmental protection. We’re responsible for what comes out of your tap, and what happens after you flush the toilet.

Community growth has a huge impact on water supply and delivery. It’s up to us to determine how best to meet the growing needs of Niagara, and ensure water and wastewater infrastructure accurately reflects this.

Purpose

The Water and Wastewater Master Servicing Plan will examine two things: how we do it and how we plan to do it in the future.

“How we do it” evaluates the performance of our treatment plants, pumps and pipes.

“How we plan to do it” ensures that we account for community growth. For example, are the pipes in the ground where we need them? Residential and employment development has a huge impact on our business. It will help us determine what we need and where, making us growth-ready for the future.

In 2011, the Region completed a Master Servicing Plan which looked at planned growth to 2031. With an updated planning horizon to 2041, the plan needs to reflect new growth projections. When complete, the plan will:

  • Provide safe, sustainable and optimized water and wastewater services that support growth
  • Develop a long term servicing strategy that meets today’s needs while planning for tomorrow
  • Provide a business case for the need, timing and cost of maintaining infrastructure in a fully integrated process with Niagara 2041

2: Baseline modelling and model calibration

3: Review of growth activities, creation of policies and guidelines for servicing and identification and assessment of alternatives and sustainability principles
January - September 2016
4: Alternative design concepts for the preferred growth scenario October 2016 - January 2017
