Wainfleetis a small community, with a population of 6,601 residing in an area of 217.29 km2.

Wainfleet is situated on the southern side of the Niagara region along the banks of Lake Erie.

Population density
Wainfleet has a relatively small rural area compared to the rest of Niagara. There are approximately approximately 30.4 people in 1 square kilometre compared to 230.5 in Niagara and 13.4 in Ontario.

Population change
Between 2001 and 2006, the population of Wainfleet grew by 5.5%. This means the population of Wainfleet grew more than the population of Niagara (4.1%) yet less than the population growth of Ontario (6.6%).

Population who did not graduate from high school
15.7% of the population of Wainfleet, between the ages of 25 and 64, have not completed their high school education; compared to 14.0% in Niagara and 13.6% in Ontario.

Lone parent familiies
Wainfleet has a lower percentage of single mothers (7.8%), among the families with children at home, compared to Niagara (21.9%) and Ontario (20.0%). As for families with single fathers, Wainfleet has a lower percentage (5.0%) than Niagara (5.4%) and a higher percentage than Ontario (4.5%).

Language, immigration and Aboriginals
Almost all of Wainfleet residents are able to speak either English or French.  Only a small percentage, less than 0.1%, cannot.  In Niagara, less than 1% of residents are unable to speak either English or French, but in Ontario the percentage is higher at 2.2%.
 
1.8% of people in Wainfleet are of a Visible minority, which is much lower than the Visible minority population of Niagara at 6.3%, and even lower than that of Ontario (22.8%). In terms of immigration, Wainfleet has a lower percentage of people immigrating in the last five years (1.8%) than Niagara (10.4%) and Ontario (17.1%).

In Wainfleet there are a greater percentage of Aboriginals (2.9%) compared to Niagara (1.6%) and Ontario (2%)  However, only Aboriginals who live off reserve were surveyed by the census.

Population with Low income
Wainfleet has a lower number of people considered as living in Low income (before tax) (7.0%) than both Niagara (12.0%) and Ontario (14.7%). The same goes for the ‘after tax Low income’ percentages. After taxes, the percentage of people living within the Low income bracket is as follows: 4.3% in Wainfleet, 8.4% in Niagara, and 11.1% in Ontario.

In Wainfleet, about 8.5% families who are considered Low income (before tax) have a child/youth under the age of 18 living with them. After tax, 6.1% of families are considered Low income, which is similar to Niagara (10.5%) and lower than Ontario (13.7%).

To examine geographical patterns of socio-economic indicators (e.g. income, low education), a priority index was developed to explore characteristics of the Niagara region.  A Priority Population is defined as those populations that are at risk and for whom public health interventions (e.g. the Health Box program)  may be reasonably considered to have a substantial impact at the population level.

Limited data are available for leading causes of death of Wainfleet residents aged 0-64. However ischaemic heart disease is the leading cause for death for males in this age group (similar to Niagara).

Ischaemic heart disease is the top leading cause of death for both males and females in Wainfleet, which is similar to Niagara. Data are insufficient for other leading causes of death.

In Wainfleet, the top 5 leading causes for hospitalizations among males and females aged 0-64 are quite similar to those of the Niagara region, but do have some differences.

Females
The difference between Wainfleet and Niagara females aged 0-64 is that for Wainfleet chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/bronchiectasis and complications of surgical and medical care complete the top 5, whereas in Niagara, mood affective disorders and disorders related to Short gestation and Low birth weight are the other causes of hospitalizations.

Males
For males aged 0-64, the difference between Wainfleet and Niagara is that in Wainfleet, pain in throat/chest and conduction disorders/cardiac arrhythmias complete the leading top 5 causes of hospitalizations in Wainfleet and in Niagara, Acute myocardial infarction and diabetes are the other top 5 causes of hospitalizations.

Females
For females in Wainfleet over the age of 65, the only difference in causes between Wainfleet and Niagara is Wainfleet reports complications of surgical and medical care in the top 5, whereas Niagara reports Fracture of femur.

Males
In Wainfleet, for males over the age of 65, report angina pectoris as one of the top 5 causes of hospitalizations. Niagara region, on the other hand, identifies Pneumonia as one of the top 5.

Overall, 1.3% of pregnant women in Wainfleet attended Prenatal classes offered by Niagara Region Public Health last year. 

The Parkyn Postpartum Screening Tool is an instrument designed to indicate families with a new baby who may be at an increased risk of developmental challenges based on health, physical and social drawbacks. Information on high-risk scores are unfortunately not available for Wainfleet due to insufficient data.  In 2007, there were 28 live births to mothers from Wainfleet; representing less than 1% of the total newborns throughout Niagara.

Data on Preterm birth and low birthweights and mother smoking during pregnancy were insufficient to report.

In Wainfleet, 78.6% of mothers breastfed while in the hospital. Wainfleet was similar to Niagara for only breastfeeding. Data on breastmilk and formula as a feeding method was unavailable.
