Niagara Region, March 5, 2010 - Niagara Region Public Health has issued a closure order to Needlez Tattoo, a tattoo establishment located at 16 Thorold Road East in Welland, owned and operated by Kaine Mackey. This facility was in operation from December 2009 through to March 2010.
Public Health received a public complaint regarding this facility and conducted an onsite inspection to assess the status of tattooing and piercing equipment and sterilization techniques. At this time there is no evidence of transmission of infectious diseases, such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, but the discovery of the improperly sterilized equipment indicates a potential risk that should be discussed with Public Health officials.
Although Public Health has been in contact with the operator of Needlez Tattoo, detailed and complete client information was not available. "We ask all clients who received tattooing or piercing services at this location between December 2009 and March 2010 to see their physician or visit a walk-in clinic and ask for a blood test for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), hepatitis B and hepatitis C," urged Dr. Robin Williams, Medical Officer of Health.
In addition, Public Health is recommending that anyone who received tattooing or piercing services from this establishment take precautions until evidence of transmission for infectious diseases can be ruled out. Affected individuals are encouraged to use a condom during sexual activity and to avoid sharing razors, clippers, toothbrushes, and other personal items.
