NIAGARA REGION, December 22, 2009 - Niagara Emergency Medical Services, Niagara Region Police Association, and Niagara residents donated over 930 Tim Hortons $10 Gift Cards to Canadian Forces personnel serving overseas.
On December 1, 2009 Niagara Emergency Medical Services Chief John Cunnane issued a challenge, along with other emergency service organizations across Canada, to all of his staff and the community to support the initiative "Share a Cup With a Brave Canuck!" The challenge encouraged individuals across the region to purchase a $10 Tim Hortons gift card, including a personal message, to be sent to every soldier serving in Afghanistan.
A special thank you is extended to a caring eight year-old, Madeline Roberts of Parnall Elementary School in St. Catharines. Madeline, daughter of Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedic Mayram Traub, learned of the challenge and wanted to participate. Madeline was inspired to make a difference by giving those overseas a little something for Christmas since they are away from their families. With the help of her principal and her classmates at Parnall Elementary they were able to raise enough money to purchase 280 $10 Tim Hortons gift cards.
"We are thrilled to have exceeded our hopes locally," stated Chief John Cunnane, Niagara Emergency Medical Services. "Across the country, a total of 4,500 $10 gift cards were collected. This is a gift for every soldier now serving overseas. The cards will arrive in Kandahar in time for Christmas."
