Acceptable Waste for Toilets

Toilets are not designed to handle the disposal of garbage. Unsuitable items are commonly found in clogged pipes and broken pumps throughout Niagara sewer systems.

Acceptable Waste

The only two materials that are acceptable to be flushed down a toilet are human waste and toilet paper.

Note: Products labelled "flushable" may not break down at the wastewater treatment plant. Dispose of those materials through your garbage or recycling instead.

Unacceptable Materials

The following should never be flushed down your toilet:

  • Paper towel
  • Rags and disposable wipes
  • Dental floss
  • Baby diapers and wipes
  • Sanitary pads
  • Condoms
  • Tampons and applicators
  • Fats, oils and grease
  • Cotton swabs
  • Cigarette butts
  • Any item that can otherwise be recycled, composted or placed in the garbage

Refer to the item disposal list if you're unsure of how to dispose of an item.
