Introduction to Stress Management

Children are not naturally prepared to deal with stress. One of the responsibilities of parents is to help children deal with stress by responding to their needs, and encouraging them to talk about their feelings. It is important that parents and caregivers be aware of the signs and symptoms of stress and help children learn healthy ways to deal with stress.

Helping your children learn how to deal with stress can take time, and some children will find some ways easier to learn than others. Remember:

  • Children up to five years of age can learn relaxation and stretching activities, but they will need help from you when starting out
  • As with all skill development, learning is helped by practice
  • Children learn best when parents set an example by dealing with their own stress in a healthy way

Stress-management strategies help children to:

  • Feel in control/feel less helpless
  • Learn how to relax
  • Become more confident
