Strategies for Teachers to Help Children Cope with Stress

  • Greet each child warmly everyday
  • Spend time with each child everyday
  • Value each child
  • Make the classroom environment a happy place for the students
  • Make sure activities are well supervised
  • Display students’ work on walls and bulletin boards
  • Be organized and stick to a routine as much as possible
  • Be concerned with not only studying and learning but also with socializing, security, and evidence of self-worth
  • Appropriate books, supplies, and resources should be in adequate supply
  • Have children work in groups more often to reduce the feeling of competition
  • Reduce anxiety produced during tests by frequently going over material, and giving practice tests
  • Keep parents informed and involved through parent-teacher conferences and open school nights. This gives parents opportunities to help their children with stressful experiences in school
  • Encourage opportunities for laughter during the school day by reading funny stories or telling humorous anecdotes from personal experiences
  • Have students design and display a lunch and snack menu in the classroom to encourage healthy food choices
  • Promote a healthy self-image and positive attitude in students by responding to their needs
