Affection - Helping Children Cope with Stress

Physical closeness, such as gentle touch, a hug or snuggling, helps a child feel loved and special. It is important to start your child's day by providing an affectionate hug or kiss, and to reconnect with your child at the end of the day in a similar way.

Useful strategies:

  • a hug gives a sense of security
  • a hug is often important not only when a child is being good, but when a child is struggling, frustrated or out of control
  • a child needs love, especially when having difficulties
  • when you sit down with your child, give him or her your undivided attention
  • massage or gently stroking a child's back or forehead can calm an upset child
  • a gentle hand on a child's shoulder lets him/her know you are close by

*Children have different needs. Some children enjoy touch more than others. Younger children are usually more receptive, but as they grow older, their own natural preference may change.

Learn what ways your child is most comfortable with giving and receiving affection. What are some of the ways you show closeness and affection? Could you provide more?
