Bisphenol A is an industrial chemical used to make a hard, clear plastic known as polycarbonate, which is used in many consumer products, including some dental fillings and sealant material, reusable water bottles and baby bottles.
In general, most Canadians are exposed to very low levels of Bisphenol A and it does not pose a significant health risk. However, in light of current media attention surrounding the potential health effects and environmental impact, the Government of Canada has created a Fact Sheet to educate consumers and parents of newborns and infants less than 18 months of age.
Dental sealants are an excellent method of protecting against cavities and the need for fillings. Dental sealants are available to eligible children and help to reduce the prevalence of tooth decay. Although the dental sealant products used in the Niagara Region Public Health dental clinics do not contain Bisphenol A (BPA), two fact sheets issued by the Ontario Dental Association and the Canadian Dental Association will be of assistance to residents seeking information relating to dental sealants and BPA.
In addition to these fact sheets, further general information on Bisphenol A can be found at: www.chemicalsubstances.gc.ca or call 1-866-891-4542
