On Wednesday, March 31, 2010, the Niagara Region hosted the Greenbelt After Five Years Summit at the Four Points by Sheraton in Thorold.
The day began with speaker presentations from Margaret Walton - partner from Planscape, Dr Jim Brandle, Chief Executive Officer of Vineland Research and Innovation Centre and Patrick Robson, Commissioner, Integrated Community Planning at Niagara Region on best practices and lessons learned in agriculture. The speakers also provided remarks on policy changes, lessons learned and Regional valued added farm policy.
The summit featured a panel discussion - comprised of experienced farmers and policy experts, who each spoke on the successes and challenges of the Greenbelt after five years. This session was facilitated by Debbie Zimmerman, and it was followed with a question and answer period.
In the second half of the day attendees focused on agriculture and taxes and what improvements can be made. The results generated in these discussions are being passed onto Brock University for further review and study.
