Fleet Maintenance
Function - Provide and maintain the Public Works fleet of vehicles and equipment.
Operations
Under the direction of the Manager of Fleet Services, the Fleet Section provided services for approximately 179 licenced vehicles, 55 pieces of large equipment and 171 peices of small equipment, most of which is in the Public Works Department.
Vehicle and equipment services are provided from three fleet maintenence facilities located in Thorold, Welland and Smithville. A combined staff of 17 employees under the direction of the supervisor of fleet maintenance provides regular mechanical maintenance and repairs, body shop repairs, structural fabrication and new vehicle and equipment make ready.
Safety and Training - Function
Provide operating and safety related training for operators of vehicles and equipment
Operations
The Fleet Section through its safety and training officer provides driver training for the Public Works Department and equipment operator training for the Transportation Services Division. Some training is also provided to other departments and municipalities on request. In addition, 40 motor vehicle and equipment accidents were investigated.
In order to provide approved services with limited tax dollars, it is important that Niagara's equipment be reliable, cost-efficient and fully utilized. To accomplish this, an Equipment Management System establishes procedures to plan, organize, direct and control fleet maintenance and replacement functions. Using the Equipment Management System, a fleet technician monitors vehicles and equipment for usage and performance. Specifications have been changed where appropriate at the time of replacement to reflect the higher or lower calibre of equipment which is better suited to the job requirements. Equipment is eliminated where a change of job activities or usage hours does not warrant owning the equipment.
Truck Rodeo
The Truck Rodeo is designed to test and improve the knowledge and skills of drivers as part of driver training and monitoring.
