Benefits and Pension Administration

The Niagara Region offers its employees an extensive benefit plan.

Eligible employees participate in the OMERS (Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System) pension plan. The pension plan for Niagara Region (and shared service partners) is administered by the Human Resources Dept., in conjunction with OMERS.

OMERS was established in 1962 as the pension plan for employees of local governments in Ontario:

  • Serves 380,000 members, retirees and survivors, and 910 employers including municipal workers, emergency services staff, school board staff (non-teaching), transit workers, hydro workers, police, fire fighters and children's aid society workers;
  • Provides retirement income for life, with inflation protection and excellent survivor and disability benefits;
  • Is a defined benefit pension plan using a formula based on a member's earnings and years of service;
  • Is funded by equal contributions from employers and members and by investment earnings of the OMERS Fund; and
  • Has grown into one the largest pension plans in Canada, with more than $48 billion in net investment assets.
