Toque Tuesday Ball Hockey Tournament
The fight against homelessness in Niagara got boost January 30 from a Toque Tuesday Ball Hockey Tournament hosted by Niagara Region. The event raised nearly $6,000 for local charities Community Care, Project S.H.A.R.E and The Hope Centre. Niagara Region’s Corporate Services team won the Adult division and Notre Dame Secondary School won the Youth division. The tournament attracted 18 teams.

Ribbon Cutting for the New Public Health Office in Welland

William Craine receives 2009 Humanitarian Award
Niagara resident William Craine, second from left, is the recipient of the 2009 T. Roy Adams Humanitarian Award. The award is presented annually to an individual who exemplifies the values and dedication to community service. Craine has served with a number of agencies, volunteering his time and expertise to assist people with addictions and anger management. Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ontario Trails Council
The late George Nicholson was honoured posthumously with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ontario Trails Council in recognition of his trail building work in Niagara.

Infrastructure Stimulus Funding
June 26, 2009 announcement of more than $18 million in Infrastructure Stimulus Funding from the provincial and federal governments. The announcement took place at the Region's Baker Road Wastewater Treatment Plant which is scheduled to receive more than $16 million for plant upgrades

2009 Niagara Region Environmental Awards
The 2009 Niagara Region Environmental Awards were presented June 11, 2009. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, these awards are one of the longest-running Environmental Awards programs hosted by any municipal government in Ontario. Weekend GO Train Service
Regional Chairman Peter Partington joined provincial and municipal officials announcing the extension of GO Train service on weekends throughout the summer, beginning in June.

National Paramedic Challenge
Presented Thursday, May 28 at Regional Council. The National Paramedic Challenge is an annual competition designed to demonstrate the skill and knowledge required to master the profession of paramedicine. Niagara Emergency Medical Services Placed first in the PCP division and fourth in the ACP division.

Presented Thursday, May 28 at Regional Council. The Award of Merit is given in recognition of outstanding initiative and meritorious execution of responsibilities as a member of Niagara Emergency Medical Services.

Presented Thursday, May 28 at Regional Council. The Systems Status Controller of the Year Award is presented to an employee who contributes outstanding service to the public, co-workers, and the community.

Paramedic of the Year - David Matthews
Presented Thursday, May 28 at Regional Council. The award of Paramedic of the Year was established to honour a paramedic who contributes outstanding service to the public, co-workers and the community. The recipient is nominated by their peers because they believe he or she is the most professional and the most deserving among them.

Public Health and Social Services Award - Julie Noble
Presented Thursday, May 28 at Regional Council. The award is given to an individual in recognition of his or her enthusiasm of promoting Niagara Emergency Medical Services within the community.

Winning bet helps ProKids
St. Catharines Mayor Brian McMullan (right) and Regional Councillor Bruce Timms (left) present a cheque for $1,000 to Dave Wyllie of the YMCA of Niagara in support of ProKids, a Niagara Region program delivered in partnership with the YMCA that provides recreation and cultural opportunities for kids from low income families.

Regional United Way Campaign
Niagara Region employees gave generously to the United Way in 2008, contributing more than $177,000 – almost $40,000 more than the campaign goal. A cheque was presented to United Way representatives at Regional Council May 28, 2009.

Emergency Preparedness Week Kick-off
About 20 local school children helped celebrate Emergency Preparedness Week, May 2 – 9 at the Niagara Region Children Safety Village in Welland. Officials from Niagara Region, the Canadian Red Cross and Emergency Management Ontario announced a new program for children designed to teach them how to plan for an emergency, including preparing a "Ready Kit" for use when disaster strikes.
