Proposed New Model for Regional Economic Development

Niagara Region is proposing a new model for Regional economic development. The new model is designed to bring a more focused, strategic approach to the goal of creating jobs, working together with municipal and private sector partners.

Developed in consultation with a wide range of stakeholders, under the proposed model responsibility for the Regional economic development function will shift from the arms-length Niagara Economic Development Corporation to Niagara Region. Activities will be undertaken by a small team of staff and contracted individuals with expertise in specific economic sectors. Niagara Economic Development will be accountable to Regional Council through the Chief Administrative Officer.

Benefits of the new model:

  • Mandated accountability for actions and outcomes
  • Support for increased collaboration and cooperation among all stakeholders, including local area municipalities
  • Emphasis on sector expertise
  • Improved responsiveness to unforeseen opportunities

Niagara Economic Development will be guided by a volunteer advisory board and work together with all community partners to support the three major components of economic development:

  1. Attract investment from outside Niagara
  2. Retaining and expanding existing businesses
  3. Starting up new business (incubation)

Structure

The departmental structure of Niagara Economic Development will include newly developed and highly focused roles to carry out key economic development activities. Individual positions are included in an organizational chart with descriptions of specific roles and responsibilities.
