Temporary waste services due to flooding

Recent widespread flooding has affected properties throughout Niagara. We're working with local area municipalities on storm response and recovery, including eligible areas and temporarily enhanced waste collection services. New information will be posted as it becomes available.

If your property was affected, you may qualify for enhanced waste collection services. Find your city or town to learn what's available in your area.

Residents experiencing flooding are encouraged to contact their insurer to begin their claims process.

Information for cities and towns

  • Grimsby

    Eligibility: All flood-affected residents in Grimsby

    Temporary services from Friday, Aug, 7 to Saturday, Aug. 22

    • Curbside garbage limits are lifted for flood-related waste until Aug. 21 on your regular collection day. Flood-related garbage can be placed at the curb from Aug. 17-21, even if it's not your regular garbage collection week.
    • Residents are not required to book flood-waste related large items for curbside collection. There is no limit to the number of large items you can set out curbside on your scheduled collection day.
    • Tipping fees are waived at Niagara Road 12 Landfill until Aug. 22

    Visiting a landfill

    If visiting Niagara Road 12 Landfill for the waived tipping fees:

    • Bring identification showing you live in the eligible area
    • Maximum load per visit: one pickup truck or trailer per household
    • Cross the inbound and outbound weigh scales for processing
    • Follow all site rules, including sorting materials into the appropriate disposal areas
    • Expect longer wait times due to higher volumes
    • Vehicles may be metered onto the site to help manage traffic flow and maintain safety

    Waste facilities will close at the scheduled time. Vehicles already on-site before closing will be processed; vehicles waiting outside the gate at closing will not be admitted.

    Contractors bringing material can present a work order from an affected property as proof of eligibility. The one trailer or pick up truck limit still applies.

  • Lincoln

    Eligibility: All flood-affected residents in Lincoln

    Temporary services from Wednesday, Aug. 5 to Saturday, Aug. 22

    • Curbside garbage limits are lifted for flood-related waste from Aug. 10-21 on your regular collection day. Garbage can be placed at the curb from Aug. 10-14, even if it's not your regular garbage collection week.
    • Residents are not required to book flood-waste related large items for curbside collection. There is no limit to the number of large items you can set out curbside on your scheduled collection day.
    • Tipping fees are waived at Niagara Road 12 Landfill from Aug. 6-22

    Visiting a landfill

    For Niagara Falls residents whose properties were affected by the flooding, learn about flood recovery support and register for enhanced waste services through the Flood Recovery Program.

  • Niagara-on-the-Lake

    Eligibility: All flood-affected residents in Niagara-on-the-Lake

    Temporary services from Monday, Aug. 10 to Friday, Aug. 21

    • Properties can set out 3 additional bags / cans beyond the regular limit on their scheduled collection day until Aug. 21 even if it is not your regular garbage collection week. This does not include large items, large appliances or hazardous waste.
    • Large household items must be scheduled through the regular booking process, with a limit of 4 household items per collection day. Book your large item collection.

    Flood-related construction, demolition, and renovation waste drop off

    A large bin is available Wednesday, Aug. 12 to Friday, Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at:

    • Town Operations Yard, 1565 Four Mile Creek Rd.

    Eligibility: Niagara-on-the-Lake residents who need to dispose of flood-related construction, demolition and renovation material. Proof of residency is required.

    Household hazardous waste is not accepted at the bin.

  • St. Catharines

    Eligibility: All flood-affected residents in St. Catharines

    Temporary services until Saturday, Aug. 22

    • Curbside garbage limits are lifted for flood-related waste until Aug. 21 on your regular collection day. Garbage can be placed at the curb until Aug. 21, even if it's not your regular garbage collection week.
    • Residents are not required to book flood-waste related large items for curbside collection. There is no limit to the number of large items you can set out curbside on your scheduled collection day.
    • Tipping fees are waived at Humberstone Landfill and Bridge Street Waste and Recycling Drop-off Depot until Aug. 22

    Large bins are available Monday, Aug. 10 to Saturday, Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at:

    • Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre, 240 St. Paul St. W
    • Bill Burgoyne Arena, 129 Linwell Rd.

    Eligibility: St. Catharines residents who need to dispose of flood-related construction, demolition and renovation material. Proof of residency is required.

    Household hazardous waste is not accepted at the bins.

    Eligibility: In Thorold, only properties within the flood-affected boundaries are eligible. Enter your address into an interactive map to check your status. If your address is within the red area, your property is eligible.

    If your property isn't included in the eligible areas then please email your address and contact details to the Waste Info-Line at wasteinfoline@niagararegion.ca.

Curbside requirements

  • Keep the safety of collection crews in mind - avoid leaving sharp items exposed, such as nails or glass
  • Separate flood-related garbage from regular household garbage
  • Place material at the curb by 7 a.m. on your scheduled day, within 4 feet of the roadway
  • Bags or cans must not weigh more than 22.7 kg (50 lbs.) each

Scavenging through curbside waste set outs is not permitted under the Niagara Region Waste Management By-law. Do not scavenge, remove or sort through flood-related curbside waste. Flood-impacted materials may be contaminated or contain sharp objects or other hazards.

Accepted and not accepted items

Affected households in eligible areas, may place the following items at the curb on scheduled garbage collection days. Alternatively, these materials can be taken to public waste drop-off depots for proper disposal.

  • Household hazardous waste
  • Electronics and batteries
  • Batteries, light bulbs, paint, oils
  • Appliances (fridges, dishwashers, laundry)
  • Scrap metal
  • Liquid materials
  • Concrete, asphalt and bricks
  • Roofing shingles
  • Aggregate material (soil, sand, gravel, crushed stone)
  • Ammunition
  • Explosives
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Aerosol cans (full or partially full)
  • Flammable liquids (propane, butane, lighter fluid, diesel, gasoline)
  • Compressed gas tanks (helium, CO2)
