Exemptions to the Two Bag / Can Limit
Single-family homes and apartment buildings with six or fewer units can place up to two bags / cans of garbage at the curb for collection every other week. Exemptions to the curbside garbage limit can be considered for eligible households.
Available exemptions

Diaper waste
Available to eligible households with children under the age of four in diapers that cannot contain the diaper waste within the regular curbside garbage limit of two bags / cans collected every other week or hold on to the diaper waste for a two-week period.
Applicants must:
- Live in a single-family home or an apartment building with six or fewer units
- Currently receive curbside collection provided by Niagara Region
- Be fully participating in the Green Bin and recycling program each week to maintain this collection service

Diaper waste from daycares
Available to eligible daycares operating out of a residential property that cannot contain the diaper waste within the regular curbside garbage limit of two bags / cans collected every other week or cannot hold on to the diaper waste for a two-week period.
Daycares must:
- Operate out of a single-family home or an apartment building with six or fewer units
- Currently receive curbside collection provided by Niagara Region
- Be fully participating in the Green Bin and recycling program each week to maintain this collection service
- Provide documentation to prove that the daycare is provincially licensed or show that income is generated through child care

Medical waste
Available to eligible households needing additional collection of non-hazardous waste generated because of a medical condition that cannot contain the waste within the regular curbside garbage limit of two bags / cans collected every other week or cannot hold on to the waste for a two-week period.
Applicants must:
- Reside in a single-family home or an apartment building with six or fewer units
- Currently receive curbside collection provided by Niagara Region
- Be fully participating in the Green Bin and recycling program each week to maintain this collection service
- Have a medical condition that results in generating additional non-hazardous and unavoidable waste
- Provide a physician or certified health care practitioner's signature verifying the medical condition
Approved waste exemptions for medical reasons must be renewed by the applicant annually with validation from a physician or certified health practitioner every seven years.

Group home medical waste
Available to eligible group homes, homes for adults with disabilities and homes for assisted living needing additional collection of non-hazardous waste generated because of a medical condition. To apply for this exemption, homes must not be able to contain the additional waste within the regular curbside garbage limit of two bags / cans collected every other week or hold on to the waste for a two-week period.
Group homes must:
- Operate out of a single-family home or an apartment building with six or fewer units
- Currently receive curbside collection provided by Niagara Region
- Be fully participating in the Green Bin and recycling program each week to maintain this collection service
- Have eligible residents with verifiable medical conditions that result in generating additional non-hazardous and unavoidable waste
- Provide documentation to prove they operate under provincial funding or they are operating out of the property address specified

Residents in a single-family home or an apartment building with six or fewer units who are physically incapable of carrying household garbage, Green Bin and recycling boxes to the curb for collection can contact the Waste Info-line for service eligibility. Registered charity exemption
Charities registered with Canadian Revenue Agency may request collection through the Region's service in addition to recycling collection from a private contractor.
