Notes About the Data

This report uses a variety of sources to provide a full picture about housing and homelessness in Niagara. The 2006 census from Statistics Canada is the main source of data, although it has been supplemented to the extent possible by other databases to provide more current, reliable information. As a result the data does come from different year depending on the source. Further, key data is missing from the 2011 census because the census asked fewer questions than in the past. The result is that less data is available for 2011, and the ability to compare with the past has been reduced.

Statistics Canada analyzes information at several different geographic levels in Niagara:

  • Niagara Census Division; includes all of Niagara (See Map 1 - Red Outline)
  • St. Catharines- Niagara Census Metropolitan Area (CMA): includes most of the Niagara Region - Grimsby and West Lincoln are excluded (see census division map below). Grimsby is included in the Hamilton CMA

The data from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) is based on the St. Catharines- Niagara Census Metropolitan Area. Data from Grimsby is included in the Hamilton reports combined with Stoney Creek. Data is not available for West Lincoln.
