The new Provincial Offences Court Facility at 445 East Main St., Welland is now open.
The single story, 20,400 square foot facility is the new home for the Provincial Offences Courts previously based out of 3 Cross Street in Welland and 4635 Queen Street in Niagara Falls. The new facility was constructed to replace the two older court facilities that did not meet provincial standards, lacked adequate courtroom space and storage space, did not meet current service demands and had significant security deficiencies.
The new courthouse is a state-of-the-art facility with modern security features including full perimeter security and adequate holding capacity. The new facility also boasts advanced AV and technological features, secure parking for Justices of the Peace, and three distinct circulation spaces as per The Ministry of the Attorney General Courthouse Standards.
The Provincial Offences Court handles non-criminal offences such as Highway Traffic Act offences, and Liquor Licence Act offences as well as municipal by-laws and other provincial and federal offences. The court also hears more serious matters such as charges under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, the Environmental Protection Act, the Fire Prevention and Protection Act and the Alcohol and Gaming Act.
