Grimsby New Trunk Watermain Class Environmental Assessment
All Niagara Region projects
About the project
Niagara Region has started a Schedule 'B' Municipal Class Environmental Assessment to investigate alternative trunk main routes in Grimsby. The routes convey water from the Grimsby Water Treatment Plant to Parkridge Reservoir. This project will allow for more efficient operation of the water distribution system. It will also make sure the new capacity and future flow demand requirements are met.
The proposed study area is within Lake Ontario to the north, Mud Street to the south, Stoney Creek to the west and Lincoln to the east.
This study will describe the existing conditions in the area and will develop and evaluate alternative routes. It will determine a solution and identify methods to avoid or minimize impacts to the community and natural environment.
This study is being completed as a Schedule 'B' Municipal Class Environmental Assessment and includes Phases 1 and 2 of the Municipal Engineers Association process. It examined different crossing locations along the Niagara Escarpment and alignment routes throughout Grimsby.
After a detailed review of the alignment options, a preferred alignment was identified. It runs along the North Service Road, crosses under the QEW and CN Rail using trenchless construction, continues along Murray Street, crosses under 40 Mile Creek using trenchless construction, then follows Elm Street, Mountain Street, Elm Tree Road and Park Road to the Park Ridge Reservoir. This alignment is recommended because it reduces impacts to the environment and the community. It is also more cost-efficient than the other options.
