New Official Plan to shape future growth and prosperity in Niagara announces Regional Chair Alan Caslin

Niagara Region has begun a multi-year planning process leading to the development of a new Official Plan that will shape how Niagara grows and develops over the next two decades. When completed the Niagara Region Official Plan 2021 – 2041 will be a land use policy document that will:

  • Promote and achieve development outcomes that contribute to complete community solutions and an authentic urban experience
  • Protect natural and agricultural resources and adequately respond to the challenges of climate change
  • Provide clear policy direction where necessary and discretion where appropriate
  • Address Provincial requirements, Regional mandate matters and provide guidance to local municipalities

Specifically, the new Official Plan will provide high level policy direction on a wide range of matters such as strategic locations for growth/development (downtowns and around GO transit Stations, employment areas, housing, natural heritage protection, agricultural lands, aggregates, climate change, cultural heritage, transit and servicing.)

The plan will be completed in sections. Policy sections will be brought forward to Regional Council for endorsement with Council ultimately adopting a consolidated formal Official Plan in 2021. The plan must also be approved by the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing under the Ontario Planning Act.

The Region will undertake significant public engagement to gather input from residents and other stakeholders to inform the plan’s development.  As well, the Region will soon be recruiting members of the public to serve on a Planning Advisory Committee whose role will be to review background studies and proposed policy.

Quotes

"The Region’s Official Plan is a significant planning document that sets out how Niagara will grow and develop in the future. This work is about building on Niagara’s many strengths to create a future full of promise and opportunity for all of our citizens. Getting the plan right starts with meaningful consultation with communities, businesses and residents across Niagara, and I, along with my Council colleagues, look forward to beginning this exciting process."
