James Rennie, 2018 T. Roy Adams Humanitarian Award Recipient

Niagara Region is pleased to announce that James Rennie is the 2018 recipient of the T. Roy Adams Humanitarian Award in recognition of his dedication to community service.

James has made a tremendous contribution to increase the quality of life and autonomy of people with physical limitations. The impact of the devices he has created and constructed has benefitted many individuals in Niagara.

  • He has volunteered with the Tetra Society Hamilton-Halton-Niagara Chapter since 2008 to help people with disabilities achieve an independent and fulfilling life by designing and constructing personalized assistive devices.
  • James understands that the simplest device can change one individual’s ability and life. The projects he has worked on range from simple daily living skills to vocational and recreational.
  • James has contributed his creative designs and constructive skills to 24 projects which amount to over 1500 hours of volunteer service.
  • 2 types of projects that have become universally beneficial to many organizations and individuals are:
    • Accessible Cribs that assist individuals who are confined to a wheelchair to independently look after their child.
    • Bocce Ball Launchers, for Brock Niagara Penguins, BCM International Canada (Handi-Camp) and Heartland Forest to provide a mechanism for individuals that previously could not participate in the sport.
  • Other projects for individuals in Niagara include ramping systems and platforms for home access, a modified scooter seat, personalized trays for eating and working, camera mounts for wheelchairs and a footrest for a racing wheelchair.
  • The impact of the devices he has created and constructed has benefitted many individuals in the Niagara region

​This year marks the sixteenth anniversary of the T. Roy Adams award which is presented annually to a Niagara resident who exemplifies the values and dedication to community service of the late T. Roy Adams.  Mr. Adams served on Regional Council as Mayor of St. Catharines from 1976 to 1985 and as a Regional Councillor from 1988 to 2002.
