The future Niagara Falls GO Station neighbourhood now has a plan in place to manage its future surrounding land use and transportation improvements. The Niagara Falls Transit Station Secondary Plan has now been approved by Regional Council.
Provincial commitment to bring daily GO Rail service to Niagara Falls by 2023 is a significant investment that will provide transformational benefit to the community. The Province has selected the existing VIA Rail Station located on Bridge Street between Victoria Avenue and the Niagara Parkway as the confirmed Niagara Falls GO Station site.
Niagara Region has partnered with the City of Niagara Falls to develop a secondary plan that provides a 20-year vision and planning framework to guide transit-supportive development and redevelopment around the GO Station. The plan contains policy and guidelines for development that respects existing neighbourhoods and is complimentary to the areas character. The plan also identifies capital infrastructure improvements needed to provide residents and commuters with safe and efficient access to the GO Station.
The vision and policies of the secondary plan have been shaped through an extensive public consultation process. Highlights from the plan include policies that: protect existing stable residential neighbourhoods; preserve heritage buildings and significant local features; outline urban design guidelines for new development and redevelopment; and, provide for expanded land use permissions that enable mixed use development.
Transportation connections are strategically identified to attract people to the downtown, and increased emphasis is placed on the shared bi-national connection between the City and Niagara Falls, NY. The plan envisions and allows for development which contains a mixture of residential, commercial, and employment uses - giving residents a community where they are able to live, work and play.
The Niagara Falls GO Station is one of three GO Stations where Niagara is actively working on future development and capital improvements - the other Stations being located in Grimsby and St. Catharines. These Stations are part of Niagara’s larger efforts to improve transit in the region. The Plan will help to ensure that we as a region can ensure the successful implementation of daily GO Train service once it arrives with stops in Grimsby by 2021, and St. Catharines and Niagara Falls by 2023.
