Residents encouraged to report potholes to Niagara Region

Niagara Region is committed to responding to and repairing potholes occurring on Regional roads as a result of harsh winter weather conditions.

Residents can report a pothole on the Region’s website or by calling 905-980-6000 ext. 3690 or toll-free at 1-877-552-5579. If your vehicle is damaged after striking a pothole, it's recommended you take following actions:

  • Stop driving your vehicle if it is not operating properly
  • Record the exact location of the pothole and report it to the municipality as outlined above
  • Have the vehicle inspected by a licensed mechanic
  • Contact your insurance broker or insurer as you may have coverage for this type of vehicle damage

During the winter, potholes and road deterioration can occur due to changes in temperature and precipitation. Potholes form when extreme cold temperatures create a deep frost layer which freezes the road base. When water seeps into cracks in the pavement, it can refreeze, pressing up and lifting the pavement surface. Then when traffic hits the lifted pavement it crumbles causing a pothole.

Regional crews are monitoring our roadways throughout the winter making road repairs where needed. Niagara Region recently made pothole repairs along Martindale Road in St. Catharines, between 406 and Erion Road. While temporary fixes can be completed throughout the winter, longer-term repairs need to wait for the warmer weather.

Niagara Region continues to take action to maintain and improve the quality of Regional roads, ensuring the safe and rapid movement of goods, services and residents across Niagara.

In 2018, Niagara Regional Council is set to invest $9.5 million in road resurfacing and repair across Niagara. This is in addition to the $12.5 million investment made to the roads program in 2017 that saw the resurfacing and repair of 51 lane kilometres of roads last year.

Residents can visit the Region’s website at www.niagararegion.ca for information about filing a claim and more information about roads projects in the region.
