Niagara Region working with Habitat for Humanity to improve access to housing

Regional Chair Alan Caslin, on behalf of Regional Council, today accepted a plaque from Habitat for Humanity Niagara recognizing the Region’s contribution to the construction of four Habitat homes in 2017.

The Region provided grants to Habitat to offset development charges totaling $44,202 supporting the construction of homes in Fort Erie, Welland, Grimsby, and Niagara Falls. The grants were provided under the Region’s Non-Profit Regional Development Charges Grant program. The program has an annual budget of $150,000 to support projects that align with Council’s strategic goals and objectives.

About Habitat for Humanity Niagara

Habitat Niagara builds decent, and affordable houses and provides no-down-payment, interest-free mortgages to qualifying families who would otherwise not be able to purchase their own homes. Habitat is not a giveaway program – we provide "a hand up not a hand out."  Established locally in 1993, Habitat Niagara will be constructing its 57th home in Niagara later this year. Habitat for Humanity Niagara also operates a retail outlet – the ReStore – selling donated new and used building materials, hardware, appliances, and home supplies. Revenue from the ReStore supports our overhead costs ensuring that every donated dollar goes directly to building affordable homes for families. The Niagara ReStores are located at 2499 Hwy 20 E, Fonthill, 185 South Service Road, Grimsby, and 150 Bunting Road, St. Catharines.

"We are very thankful for Regional Council and staff for the priority that they place on affordable homeownership in Niagara,” said Alastair Davis, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Niagara. “Their commitment has been outstanding, and we look forward to having council and staff coming out to a build site and working side by side with our homeowner families. "
