Waste Reduction Week is a national environmental campaign that builds awareness around sustainable and responsible consumption, and promotes actions that divert more waste from disposal and conserve natural resources. In recognition of Waste Reduction Week, October 16-22, Niagara Region will be offering free public tours, hosting an information booth and holding a contest to educate residents about the importance of waste reduction.
Residents will have the opportunity to learn what happens to their recycling once it leaves the curb through a tour of the Recycling Centre and to experience the diversity of Niagara’s nature and wildlife on a guided tour of the award winning Glenridge Naturalization Site. Tours are free of charge, reservations are required to participate in the tours and space is limited.
Recycling Centre Tour – Wednesday, October 18, 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.

Join Niagara Region and Niagara Recycling for a 45-minute guided tour of Niagara Region’s Recycling Centre. Learn first-hand about the machines, processes and people that sort, bale and ship your recyclables. For safety reasons, closed toed shoes with long pants are required. Individuals must be 10 years of age or older and be able to walk a flight of stairs to participate.
Glenridge Naturalization Site Tour – Tuesday, October 17, 10 a.m.
Tour begins at the Glenridge Naturalization Site parking lot located at 1860 Sir Isaac Brock Way, St. Catharines.
Learn how this site went from a limestone quarry to municipal landfill to naturalization site through a guided walking tour that will provide an overview of the site’s history and the process of reclamation and naturalization of the area. Take the opportunity to see an array of birds and wildlife as you explore the site’s trails, ponds and meadows. Participants are asked to wear comfortable shoes and dress according to weather conditions.

In the event of inclement weather, attendees will be contacted and a rain date has been set for the Glenridge Naturalization Site for Friday, October 20, 2017 at 10 a.m.

Niagara Region waste management staff will be available to provide information and answer questions on a variety of waste management programs in the Niagara region. Additionally, staff will be selling Blue Boxes, Grey Boxes, Green Bins and Kitchen Catchers.
‘Reuse Your Goods’ Contest Draw – Monday, October 16 – Sunday, October 22
Niagara Region, in partnership with Goodwill Niagara, encourage residents to reduce their waste through the donation of re-useable goods. Donate a re-usable item at the Humberstone Reusable Goods Drop-off depot located at the Humberstone Landfill site in Welland from October 16-22 and receive a ballot to enter a draw to win one of two $50 Visa gift card. Acceptable donations are at the discretion of the attendant.
(This contest is not open to employees of Niagara Region).
Hours of operation are Humberstone Landfill: Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday closed.
