New supportive housing to address homelessness in Niagara, announces Regional Chair Alan Caslin

Provincial funding of $5.4 million over three years through the province’s Home for Good program will make an important difference in supporting Niagara’s efforts to address homelessness, Regional Chair Alan Caslin announced today.

The funding, provided by the Ministry of Housing, will enable the construction of 23 new supportive housing units and an additional 40 community based units, providing supports to 63 people in need.

The Region will seek to partner with community agencies to manage the new units and deliver the support services.

Supportive housing is a type of permanent rental housing for people who require ongoing supports to help them live independently.

The new funding follows an innovative proposal developed by staff in Community Services and Public Health in consultation with multiple stakeholders.  It was brought forward to Queen’s Park by the Regional Chair and Council with the support of St. Catharines MPP Jim Bradley.

Additional funding to address homelessness was a priority issue Regional Councillors discussed with the Minister of Housing at the Association of Municipalities Ontario Annual Conference in 2016 and highlighted in the Regional Chair’s 2017 Annual State of the Region Address.
