New roundabout complete on Bridge Street (Regional Road 43) at Victoria Avenue in Niagara Falls

A new roundabout is now complete on Bridge Street (Regional Road 43) at Victoria Avenue in Niagara Falls. This roundabout is an integral part of the larger Thorold Stone Road (Regional Road 57) extension project, which is targeted for completion in 2024.

The roundabout features key design elements including:

  • Reconstruction of Bridge Street (Regional Road 43) and Victoria Avenue into a single lane roundabout, including the extension of the fifth leg of Thorold Stone Road (Regional Road 57) for future connection
  • Replacement of the existing watermain
  • Separation of the existing combined sewers including new sanitary sewers and storm sewers
  • Installation of new sidewalks, including bike lanes and a multi-use path
  • Upgrades to the illumination and landscaping

The project was completed approximately two weeks ahead of the anticipated completion date.

The success of this project could not have been achieved without the cooperative attitude of the entire project team which includes Rankin Construction (contractor), the City of Niagara Falls, Niagara Region and WSP (consultant – Design).

As part of that project, we will integrate design elements that support Complete Streets focused on enhancing the functionality of boulevards and roadway safety.

The goal is to provide an innovative and creative solution that is:

  • Environmentally sustainable
  • Attracts growth on adjacent lands
  • Supports active transportation and other modes of mobility to help people of all ages travel throughout Niagara

With improved transportation connectivity and daily GO train service to Niagara Falls by 2023, there was a clear opportunity to leverage and enhance the land uses to ensure it's an attractive arrival point for commuters and visitors.

Niagara Region is working with the City of Niagara Falls to determine a vision for the GO Station area. This includes road, transit, public realm and active transportation options for the Bridge Street / GO Station area as identified in the approved Niagara Falls Transit Station Secondary Plan.

"The completion of this new roundabout at Bridge Street and Victoria Avenue in Niagara Falls is an integral part of the Region’s project to extend Thorold Stone Road. By completing this roundabout, we can move onto the next phase of the project, ensuring we make this area attractive to visitors who will be coming in using GO Transit. I look forward to seeing the rest of the project completed and thank all the partners on this project for completing this beautiful roundabout."
~ Jim Bradley, Regional Chair
"When people see road construction, they often aren’t aware of the major work that has gone on underneath the ground. This critical job of separating sewers in an historic area of our City will now ensure the watermain and sewers are in good working order for the residents and businesses here for many years to come. The bonus is, the new road surface and roundabout will help enhance safety and traffic flow near the GO Station for thousands of visitors and locals alike."
~ Mayor Jim Diodati, City of Niagara Falls
