Niagara Emergency Medical Services (NEMS) is the recipient of two Excellence in EMS Integration awards this year from the Academy of International Mobile Healthcare Integration (AIMHI), an organization representing high performance emergency medical and mobile healthcare providers around the world.
In their third year, the AIMHI Excellence in EMS Integration Awards honours and promotes high-performance, high-value Emergency Medical Services, its partners and leaders. Currently, NEMS is one of only two Canadian organizations that are a part of the AIMHI.
Of the five awards categories, NEMS has received both the Excellence in EMS Integration award for the Mental Health & Addictions Response Team (MHART), and the Excellence in Value Demonstration or Research for the EMS Response Time Performance Plan.
The Excellence in EMS Integration Award recognizes a non-EMS organization that has developed and implemented a partnership with an EMS organization that have demonstrated enhancement of patient experience of care, improved patient outcomes, or reduced the cost of healthcare. NEMS was given this award for their development of MHART which addresses low acuity mental health and addictions calls in Niagara. Comprised of a Paramedic and a Mental Health Registered Nurse who respond to emergency calls together, MHART performs mental health assessments during these calls and will intervene accordingly.
MHART was implemented in 2018 as a partnership with paramedics and vehicles provided by NEMS and mental health nurses provided in-kind by partner organizations: Niagara Health, Welland McMaster Family Health Team, and Quest Community Health Centre. Since its launch NEMS has tracked the number of mental health and addictions related calls, and have consistently responded to between 350 to 400 calls per quarter.
The Excellence in Value Demonstration or Research Award recognizes an organization that has created and implemented an analysis of data and/or research project to demonstrate the value impact of the services provided by the organization. NEMS is being honoured with this award for redesigning their response priority plan to improve ambulance availability for life-threatening calls and reduce the use of lights and sirens for a response. The work done on this project shows an evidence-based approach to response planning in order to deliver efficient and safe response planning for both paramedics and patients.
The two awards NEMS is receiving in 2022 follows NEMS receiving the 2021 AIMHI Excellence in Value Demonstration or Research Awards for research paper about Mobile Integrated Health, which also received Paper of the Year from the Canadian Association of Health Services and Policy Research.
