Regional Council appoints Ron Tripp as Niagara Region’s new Chief Administrative Officer

After completing an exhaustive competitive search, Niagara Regional Council has officially appointed Ron Tripp to the role of permanent Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).

The CAO is the most senior municipal public servant and the only direct employee of Council. In this capacity, Niagara Region’s CAO is charged with the oversight of all Regional operations, providing high-level leadership to more than 3,000 Regional staff and ultimately delivering on Regional Council’s strategic vision.

Tripp's appointment comes after a 10-month long comprehensive process that was managed by the recruitment firm Legacy Partners, under the direction of Regional Council’s CAO Recruitment Committee.

Ron Tripp has more than 20 years of municipal experience, formerly holding senior roles with the City of St. Catharines and the Town of Fort Erie, where he served as the Acting Chief Administrative Officer. Most recently, Tripp has been serving as Niagara Region’s Acting CAO since December of 2018, vacating his permanent role of Commissioner of Public Works.

During his time as Acting CAO, Tripp has provided leadership on a number of significant issues, including the Region’s involvement in the Canada Summer Games, the Provincial Governance Review and, most importantly, the Region’s response to the COVID-19 crisis.

This recruitment process was heavily informed by the recommendations made by the Provincial Ombudsman in his 2019 Inside Job report. As such, the process was as transparent as possible, while maintaining confidentiality and fairness to all involved.

Ron Tripp will move into his permanent role starting Oct. 4, 2021.

"Over the last three years, Ron has proven himself to be a competent, dynamic and committed leader as our Acting Chief Administrative Officer. This is particularly remarkable considering the unprecedented challenges that were brought forward by the global pandemic. While our transparent recruitment process was highly competitive, I believe Ron’s track record as a creative, resourceful and ethical leader helped to set him apart from other candidates. I want to thank the CAO Recruitment Committee for their hard work on this important file, and convey council’s confidence in Ron’s ability to deliver on our strategic vision for Niagara."
