Rino Mostacci, Commissioner of Planning and Development Services, to retire from Niagara Region Oct. 30

After six years of service as Commissioner of Planning and Development Services, Rino Mostacci announced that he will retire from Niagara Region, effective Oct. 30.

Mostacci joined Niagara Region as commissioner in September of 2014. Since that time, he has distinguished himself as a team-builder and visionary planner, driving innovation, supporting prosperity and relentlessly encouraging better urban outcomes.

Under Mostacci, the Region adopted an innovative model of district planning that has produced the Brock District Plan in Thorold, including the new International Plaza at Regional Headquarters, and the recently approved Glendale District Plan in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Under his leadership, the Region has also been preparing a new Niagara Official Plan, a comprehensive land-use planning document that will guide Niagara’s growth for the next 30 years.

Mostacci began his career at the City of Stoney Creek and prior to joining Niagara Region, also served in planning and urban design leadership roles at the City of Markham and the Town of Fort Erie. He is also the current chair of the Regional Planning Commissioners of Ontario (RPCO), a group of chief planners representing large regional and single-tier municipalities across Ontario. He holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Urban Development from the University of Western Ontario, a Graduate Certificate in Urban Design from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and Certificate in Plastic and Fine Arts from Mohawk College. He is a Registered Professional Planner (RPP) and a two-time recipient of the Canadian Institute of Planners National Award for Urban Design.

Mostacci’s last day with Niagara Region will be Oct. 30. The role of Commissioner will be temporarily filled on an acting basis until a recruitment process can be completed.

Niagara Region thanks Mostacci for his years of service, and the unique contributions he has made to the organization, and to the Niagara community. Following his retirement, Mostacci intends to continue to assist communities achieve great land use planning and development outcomes.
