You're the Chef is a cooking program designed to help develop the skills and confidence necessary for youth ages 10 and up to prepare healthy and tasty recipes emphasizing vegetables and fruit.
Along with recipe preparation, youth are taught basic kitchen safety, food safety, cooking techniques (such as how to use a knife properly) and healthy eating principles based on Canada's Food Guide.
You're the Chef sessions can run in schools or community agencies.
The cost of leader training is free, however, the cost of food and supplies are the responsibility of the school or agency.
Step 1: Recruit an individual to attend a half-day training session to become a You're the Chef leader.
Schools may recruit volunteers, such as parents, teachers and grandparents. Agencies may select staff members or volunteers. A minimum of one trained leader is required for each group of 16 youth.
First-time leaders must attend a leader training session. Training may be held at the Niagara Region Public Health office in Thorold (across the road from Brock University) or at a location in the community.
Leader trainees will receive a manual with step-by-step instructions on how to run a successful program.
Step 2: Register for the next leader training session.
The next leader training session is:
- Date: Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018
- Time: Noon - 4 p.m.
- Location: Niagara Region Public Health office
