School Immunization Record Review
Niagara Region Public Health regularly performs an immunization record review to ensure all students in Niagara have an up-to-date immunization record or valid exemption on file to attend school. This aligns with the Immunization of School Pupils Act.
The immunization record review process:
- Helps make sure all students are protected from vaccine preventable diseases
- Allows Public Health to identify those at risk in the event of an outbreak of a vaccine preventable disease at school

Public Health is sharing this data so people can stay up to date with where schools are in the immunization record review process.

Niagara is at a real risk of an outbreak
Due to pandemic-related disruptions, many students missed getting routine vaccines or updating their records. Also, Public Health had to postpone the enforcement of the Immunization of School Pupil’s Act between March 2020 and October 2022.
This means that students and their families did not get reminders to report and submit vaccines or valid exemptions to Public Health. As a result, many students have non-compliant records.
Each compliant record (up-to-date immunization record or valid exemption) brings Public Health closer to protecting our community when a vaccine preventable disease is active by being able to quickly identify at-risk students.

Vaccine preventable diseases are costly
Infections and outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases result in significant costs, including:
- Absenteeism from school or work
- Visits to health care providers
- Hospitalization
- Disability
- Premature death
Implementing immunization programs for children helps to reduce these potential costs in our community.
