Youth Substance Misuse - Statistics in Niagara

In Niagara, students were asked a variety of questions about illicit drug use and using prescription drugs for non-medicinal purposes. Students were asked how often they had used any of these drugs.

Cannabis Use in Niagara and Ontario

In Niagara, cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug among secondary students. Overall, 35.3 per cent of students have used cannabis in the past 12 months. This is not significantly different than the per cent of students who have used cannabis in Ontario.

In addition, data was collected on when students first used cannabis. Of those who had used cannabis at some point in their life, 29.6 per cent had tried it in elementary school. This is not significantly different than the per cent of students in Ontario.

Students were also asked how often they had driven within an hour of using marijuana or hashish. In Niagara, 9.8 per cent of students who had a licence reported this behaviour. This is not significantly different than the students across Ontario, where 10.0 per cent of students with a driver's licence drove within an hour of using marijuana or hashish.

Prescription Pain Medication Use in Niagara and Ontario

In Niagara, 8.8 per cent of grade 7 and 8 students and 11.9 per cent of secondary students have used prescription pain medication without having a prescription in the past 12 months. In addition, 9.8 per cent of grade 7 and 8 students and 13.3 per cent of secondary students have used prescription pain medication without having a prescription in their lifetime. This is not significantly different than Ontario.
