Healthy Eating - Statistics in Niagara

In Niagara, 40.5 per cent of the population ages 12 and over consume vegetables and fruits five or more times daily (2009-2010). This is not significantly different than the percentage of the population of Ontario who consumes vegetables and fruits five or more times daily.

Youth Healthy Eating

Niagara students were asked about their breakfast eating habits. Overall, 43.9 per cent of secondary students and 61.5 per cent of grade 7 and 8 students had breakfast on all five days of the previous school week.

There is a significant difference between grade 7 and 8 students and secondary students. However, this is not significantly different than the per cent of students in Ontario who eat breakfast all five days of the week.

Students were also asked how often they drank pop or sports drinks in the past seven days. The most common response for students was two to four times in the past seven days. This is not significantly different than the per cent for Ontario students.
