Summary



Niagara Region has a 4 to 8 month Planning Co-op Student position available from either (January to May 2019) or (January to August 2019) with the Planning and Development Services Department.

This is an excellent learning opportunity for students enrolled in an Urban, Rural or Environmental Planning-related field of study:

The Development Planning Student assists with reviewing, analyzing and preparing comments on development-related applications, including Niagara Escarpment Development Permits, zoning by-law amendments and Environmental Assessments.

The student also assists in the development of planning documents and guidelines and in carrying out research, as well as preparing maps, aerial photography, and letters/reports and other applicable data on planning and other related matters as required.

The student will have the opportunity to work alongside professional, technical and clerical staff to learn many different aspects of a job in the Planning field.


Location: Both positions are based out of Niagara Region's Headquarters Building, 1815 Sir Isaac Brock Way, Thorold, ON. The location is accessible by public transit.



Hours of work: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm

Education

  • Completion of an Ontario high school diploma or equivalency (i.e. GED) is required, plus
  • Must meet ONE of the following two post-secondary education criteria:
  • Returning to/enrolled in an Urban, Regional or Environment Planning related degree/diploma program in September 2019, or
  • On a formal co-op/work placement term in one of the program areas listed above from (January to April 2019) or (January to August 2019

Skills

  • Knowledge of planning theory and practice
  • Knowledge of the Ontario planning system, including planning & environmental legislation/policies and planning tools (e.g. official plans, zoning by-laws, etc.)
  • Knowledge/use of GIS (ex. ArcGIS), database management and graphics software
  • Proficient use of the Microsoft Office suite of products
  • Self-motivated with proven initiative
  • Ability to work unsupervised and independently and also as a team member
  • Detail oriented with excellent research and analytical skills
  • Highly developed communication skills - oral , written and graphics
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must provide proof of successful completion of high school
  • Must provide proof of enrollment in a related post-secondary program
  • Must be able to start full-time work in January 2019
  • A valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle would be assets, but not required
