Performs general kitchen duties and food preparations as required.Relieves the Cook as required and assumes the duties of the Cook at this time.

When not assuming the Cook's duties, assists the Cook with all food production.

Prepares, cooks and portions food in compliance with therapeutic diet needs and restrictions.

With the aid of recipes and menus, performs general and specialized cooking at the Senior Citizens Homes, maintaining high standards of quality production that meets the nutritional needs of the residents under the direction of the Food Services Manager.

Maintains health standards as set out by the Home and the Medical Officer of Health.


Grad 12 or equivalent
  • Must have Cook I papers or Red Seal
  • A current Safe Food Handling Certificate from Public Health
  • Completed or be enrolled in a Dietary Aide course approved by the Ontario Dietetic Association and the Ontario Food Services Supervisors Association
  • Grade 12 or equivalen


  • Minimum of 1 month of current direct institutional cooking experience.
  • A knowledge of kitchen operating procedures, food storage, and safekeeping.
  • Safety and fire regulation awareness.
  • Must have a clear understanding of Canada's Food Guide.
  • Must have the ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • A current Safe Food Handling Certificate from Public Health.


  • Ability to read menus.
  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff and residents .
  • Ability to follow oral and written directive.
  • High food standards with an interest to upgrade.
  • Goods standards of cleanliness and order.
  • Reliable and conscientious.
  • Well organized and have acceptable pace to meet time schedules.
  • Must be able to exercise judgement and initiative.

Special Requirements

  • Must have a good attendance record.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position.
  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate.

Shift Information

Currently scheduled 24 days/evenings, and may be required to work days, evenings and nights, including weekends.Occasionally required to cover cook when required.

Other Conditions

OTHER CONDITIONSAn employee who accepts a temporary posting must remain in the temporary position until the temporary position ends or for at least six months, whichever comes first, after which the employee can exercise any rights s/he has to obtain another position, and with a second exception that the employee shall be permitted to vacate the temporary position earlier if the employee is accepting a permanent posting. Upon acceptance of the permanent position the employee shall not be permitted to apply or be awarded any further temporary job postings for a period of six (6) months.

An employee who is hired into a job posting as a new hire shall not be permitted to apply or be awarded any further postings until the employee has passed their probationary period as defined in Article 14.01.
