2018 Municipal Election

The next municipal election is Monday, October 22, 2018.

Niagara Votes is a partnership between Niagara's 12 local municipalities and Niagara Region. The partnership aims to streamline communications activities to ensure candidates and electors are well informed of key dates, information and important changes related to the 2018 municipal and school board election.

The Better Local Government Act, 2018 (Bill 5)

Bill 5, the Better Local Government Act, 2018 received Royal Assent on August 14, 2018. As a result of Bill 5, the Municipal Act and the Municipal Elections Act have been amended to reverse changes made in 2016 to mandate the election of the regional chairs in the regions of York, Peel, Niagara and the District of Muskoka.

Therefore, the method of selecting the chair in 2018 will now revert back to the appointment process in place in 2014. The position of Regional Chair will be elected by members of Niagara Regional Council at their inaugural meeting to be held on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018.
