Rationale and analysis

Why this measurement is important

Organics cause an environmental impact, if improperly disposed of in the garbage/ landfill stream.

Organics in the landfill are a significant generator of methane gas. Methane is 25 times as potent as carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere.

Niagara Region’s curbside and depot organics collection program contribute towards increasing Niagara Region’s waste diversion rate.

The importance of this indicator is to measure the overall effectiveness of Niagara Region’s organics collection program.

How we measure this data

As overseen by Public Works, Waste Management.

This indicator value is based on the weight of the residential organics that are collected from curbside and drop-off depots.

Progress and advancements

The 2022 target is 45,000 tonnes of residential organics collected, which was exceeded with the collection of 45,615 tonnes in 2022.

About this indicator

This indicator reports the annual amount of residential organic waste that is collected at curbsides and drop-off depots, in tonnes. Organics include: food waste, leaf and yard waste, branches, grass clippings, et cetera.
