Rationale and analysis
How we measure this data
As reported by Statistics Canada.
Progress and advancements
Due to COVID-19, 2020 was an unprecedented year where most businesses were closed and people stayed home. This resulted in a significant reduction in shoplifting, break & enters and thefts, et cetera. Therefore, in 2021 with busineses opening back up, there is an increase in the total property crime violations. In 2022, the property crime violations continue to rise slightly.
Statistics Canada 2022 data (Table: 35-10-0177-01) shows Niagara's total property crime violations per 100,000 population is 2,697.66, which is higher than Ontario (2,599.08) and lower than Canada overall (3,314.20), for the same period.
