Rationale and analysis

How we measure this data

As overseen by Public Works, Water and Wastewater.

Calculated using flow data that is collected at various points in the collection system and at treatment plants.

Progress and advancements

Wastewater estimated to have bypassed all treatment is informed by the frequency and severity of weather events. Niagara Region’s sewage pumping stations and wastewater treatment plants are designed to manage peak wastewater flow.

However, infiltration of storm water into wastewater collection systems can significantly increase the volumes of wastewater conveyed to treatment plants, particularly during storm events. The 2021 and 2022 value increase is partly due to increased usage of bypass estimating techniques at locations that presently do not have bypass flow meters

This indicator has shown a reduction in the level of wastewater estimated to have bypassed all treatment for the fourth consecutive year.

About this indicator

This indicator measures the estimated percentage of wastewater that has bypassed all treatment (i.e. collection system and primary plant bypasses).

Untreated wastewater amounts are in accordance with wastewater bypasses as reported to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.
