Community Dashboard: Violent Criminal Code violations
Rationale and analysis
How we measure this data
Data sourced from Statistics Canada with oversight from Niagara Regional Police Service.
Progress and advancements
From 2020 to 2021, the total violent criminal code violations has continued to increase. Due to COVID-19, the past couple of years have been unprecedented where most businesses were closed and people stayed home. This, unfortunately, resulted in an increase in assaults causing bodily harm, robbery and domestic violence, which has led to an overall increase in violent crime violations during this period. In 2022, we see a slight decrease.
Statistics Canada 2022 data (Table: 35-10-0177-01) shows Niagara's total violent Criminal Code violations per 100,000 population is 838.21, which is lower than both Ontario (994.41) and Canada overall (1,364.61), for the same period.
